It's true though that the rates can be pushed very low thanks to all the videogame fans for whom translating a videogame is a dream come true and they're willing to work for peanuts and with insufficient skills. I would even disagree with the statement that videogame localization is usually poorly paid - the rates are obviously lower than in technical or highly expert fields but there are solid agencies or direct clients (like EA) that pay well. I would imagine it won't be terribly different for the other big companies. The real issue is deadlines - the whole videogame industry is a true monster in that regard, pushing for the shortest deadlines possible, but that is a well-known fact. Combined with a steady supply of work, the pay is pretty solid. Other subreddits you might likeĮA doesn't have in-house translators (for videogame localization I mean, they might have in-house translators for other stuff that I'm not aware of) and the freelance rates are pretty ok.
